Back in the day somehow sucked more than a few steps, but even then the best software companies have been in the industry. Sure, there are a number of software developers out there for other companies that eh only as good as any MS developers out there, and often better, but. . At this point, there is no software company in the world even close to where MS is in relation to the maturity and quality.
